The shape most people picture when they think of a diamond. Its facets are arranged to return as much light as possible, which is why nothing sparkles quite like it. It sits comfortably in almost any setting.

Two pointed ends and a long body give the marquise the largest face-up size of any shape for its weight, so it wears big and dramatic and lengthens the finger. Symmetry matters here more than almost anywhere.

One rounded end tapering to a single point, part oval and part marquise. It has the brilliance of a round with an elongating outline, and proportions vary widely, from broad and soft to long and slender.

The most openly romantic shape: two rounded lobes, a defined cleft, a point at the base. Brilliant faceting keeps it lively. A good heart is symmetrical and instantly readable at arm's length, which is what sets one apart.

A square or softly rectangular outline with rounded corners, named for its pillow-like shape. Depending on how it is cut it can throw broad, romantic flashes or a finer, more crushed-ice sparkle.
